 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY/RACE AND ETHNICITY

1.SUMMARY

The race is classified by biological factors. Ethnicity is related to this, but it is not the same thing. ethnicity focus on social attribute(nationality, tribe, religious faith…). There are many debates regarding race, such as debates on the definition of race, and it affects society in the form of discrimination. Racism can occur at the individual level or at the social level. This leads to other discriminations such as cultural racism, historical racism, and discrimination in salary. Racism is still prevalent in society, even though the boundaries between countries have been broken down more than before due to globalization.

2.INTERESTING POINT

As people from different racial backgrounds intermarry, the biological and genetic boundaries between racial groups become increasingly blurred. Many individuals who self-identify as belonging to a particular racial group may have mixed ancestry, reflecting the complexity and interconnectedness of human populations.

If intermarriage continues and populations become increasingly heterogeneous, the biological and genetic distinctions between races may become minute and undetectable.

Overall, this point highlights the dynamic and evolving nature of race as a concept. It challenges fixed notions of race and emphasizes the social and historical factors that shape our understanding of it.

3.DISCUSSION

Can we envision a future where racial classifications lose their biological and genetic basis altogether and become solely social constructs?
