W14.1- Introduction to Sociology/Gender -CAI YAYU

1.   Summarize

Gender in sociology refers to the study of the social construction of gender and gender inequality. Gender is a social and cultural concept, as opposed to biological sex (male and female). Sociology is concerned with how gender is shaped and defined by social and cultural factors, and how gender produces inequality and injustice in society.
In sociology, gender is considered a social construct that is shaped through the processes of socialisation, culture and social institutions. Gender roles are norms and expectations of the behaviour, roles and traits expected of men and women in society. These gender roles are often associated with traditional gender stereotypes and social expectations, such as men being expected to be strong, dominant and rational, while women are expected to be soft, dependent and emotional. These gender role expectations and norms can exert pressure on individuals and limit their freedom of choice and development.

2.   Interesting point

By studying gender, sociologists seek to understand how gender affects the behaviour of individuals and the structure of society. They explore the shaping of gender roles, the roots and effects of gender inequality and seek to achieve gender equality and gender justice through social change. These studies are important in promoting gender-equitable social change and reform.

3. Discussion point

How should different genders be treated?
