W13.2 Social inequality

1. Summarization
    Social inequality refers to the uneven distribution of wealth in a society. This creates welfare differences among different groups of people. It leads to a gender gap that limits women's opportunities. Social inequality is influenced by factors such as power, religion, status, race, ethnicity, gender, age and sexual orientation. Social inequality can also affect access to rights and privileges, healthcare, education and political representatives. So various types of social inequality exist, including wealth inequality, treatment inequality, political inequality, life inequality and membership inequality. Social mobility is the movement between social strata, either upward or downward. There are several ideologies regarding social inequality. This goes from individualistic views that consider it natural and desirable to collectivistic perspectives that aim to reduce or eliminate inequality.

2. What was interesting/what did you learn?
    Inequalities are a product of groups of people exploiting differences. By grouping, where people tend to form groups with those alike, it is likely that overtime stratification happens. With this more structural inequality occurs. What I realise is that in any difference and minority, inequality is more likely to happen.

3. Discussion points
    Arriving in Korea, I expected Koreans to be able to speak more English. On the contrary, my expectations were wrong. Naturally, on many occasions, there is a communication problem between internationals and Koreans, because of the language barrier. Not being able to communicate with others, makes it hard to connect with people. I think this sometimes leads to discriminating situations with foreigners. Whether it be accidental or purposely. To talk about equality and inequality. Do people in general realize they might be causing inequality without knowing they do?
