W12.2 Dramaturgy (sociology)

1. Summarization
Dramaturgy is a sociological perspective that looks at social interaction in everyday life as if it was a theatrical performance. It was introduced by Erving Goffman. He compared social interactions to actors on a certain stage. According to this perspective, individuals present themselves differently. That is depending on the situation and the audience, just like actors playing different roles. Goffman identified the front stage, where people perform and the backstage, where they can relax and be themselves. The goal of this 'performance' is to gain acceptance and create the desired impression. This theory also highlights the importance of creating, a personal front and borders in managing social interactions. Dramaturgical theory suggests that our identities are not fixed, however, are constantly constructed through our interactions with other people.

2. What was interesting/what did you learn?
Dramaturgy is an interesting theory and perspective of social interaction itself. It is somewhat similar to something I recently saw. A saying at which is argued that people have three different faces. One face for everyday life when interacting with the outside world. A second for personal behaviour with people close to you or being alone. A third face for someone's most private stances. Reading about the different aspects related to this strengthens a partial believability in this.

3. Discussion points
Can we truly be our authentic selves in any given situation or are we always performing to some extent? This is a tough question when confronting front stage to back stage. I'm not particularly an expert in this, however when looking at Japanese, people are sometime overpolite. When someone is trying to act to uphold social norms, but never letting others see his true emotion, people will never get to a point where they can actually understand each other.
