W12.1 Symbolic interactionism

1. Summarization
    Symbolic interactionism is a sociological theory that explores how people use symbols and meanings to communicate. It suggests that language and shared understanding influence our behaviour and shape society. According to this theory, the sense of ourself is shaped by society where we create meaning through communication. It also examines the unique relationship between individuals and society. Researchers study how people interact and develop their identities through methods like observation and participation. Symbolic interactionism highlights the active role individuals play in shaping their social environment and emphasizes the significance of our interpretations in various situations.

2. What was interesting/what did you learn?
    It is interesting to read about interactionism as it is mostly new to me. How people think and interact with themselves, as with others. The key assumptions and the premises derived from that particularly explain this. Such as the fact that people respond by looking at the meaning of someone's action. Or that when people think, they're having a conversation with themselves.

3. Discussion points
   Symbolic interactionism states that our self-identity is created by the roles we play in society and our interactions with other people. As well as the meaning we give to that. Therefore we can define who we are by the way we act and think of that. But is this true? Are people not largely defined by their biological character and are the surroundings just a small factor in all of this?
