Social movements (PREZI GG)

Social movements start with something called "Social mobility", this is a concept derived from sociology, which refers to the displacement of individuals or family members of a society within a given socio-economic spectrum and manifest publicly their concerns. In other words, it refers to the permeability of social classes to fight for a specific cause, which allows for the incorporation of new and rising individuals. This concept exists within the framework of a stratified class or society. It is very much related to the idea of ​​meritocracy: that individuals can rise socially if they try hard enough. To get equal treatment or change any specific situation that may affecta a group of people.

Social mobility is actively pursued by contemporary societies through different methods, as it guarantees a more equitable and less unequal society. The possibility of social advancement is essential for combating poverty, since social despair, ie the belief that the system will never allow the individual to develop, pushes disadvantaged strata towards radicalized political and social positions, or look for illicit economic shortcuts that only complicate their trajectory.

There are various types of social mobility, depending on the criteria used to classify it. In the case of people doing manifestations or strikes would be the following case:

Vertical mobility. It involves abandoning the initial social class to opt for a new one, either higher (enrichment) or lower (deprivation) on the socio-economic scale.

Generational: There is talk of intergenerational social mobility when there is movement between one generation and the next; and of intra-generational social mobility, on the other hand, when it takes place between individuals of the same generation. The things people usuallt defend or strike about in the past and currently are: 

  • Technological advancement: Technological advancement represents a significant increase in productivity and the generation of higher-paying new jobs, enabling people to acquire better jobs.
  • Democracy: Democracy as a system of government implies that there is no express power prohibiting the promotion of people. Healthy institutions are essential.
  • Migration: A person can travel and settle in a country with a higher standard of living, enabling them to acquire better living conditions.
  • Human rights
  • LGTBQ+ communities
