Summary
The speaker explores the role of experience that transcends the self, interacting after religion, human evolution. In his lecture, Haidt first explores why religion exists. To understand from a human evolutionary and biological perspective, it is theorized that religion will be of some help, just as it occurs in common in various societies and cultures. He focuses on the mystique of organized dance and music in many religions, and explains the experience of transcending the self with external anecdotes of these acts. Haidt introduces the concept of 'self-transcendence', which temporarily clears misunderstandings about the individual's self and provides time to review for the benefit of the group and for the purpose of life. This experience is linked to the rising characteristics behind religion and evolution. Haidt also explains how, through brain science research, religious experience has played an important role in the construction of human society by seeking to be useful to humans in manned life. He shows that solidarity between groups results in direct cooperation away from individual competition, and noted that thanks to this cooperation, humans can emerge in the process of religion and human evolution. Finally, Haidt presents several video examples to re-introduce these experiences and phenomena, and ends the story by enhancing that readers are open-minded and able to explore and accept these experiences. This lecture explains the study of religious experiences and the connectivity to human evolution, providing insight into how religion and evolution interact to influence human society and culture.
Realization
It was very interesting for the presenter to explore why humans and religions have been connected in the evolutionary process. As a result of these studies, it has been shown that religious acts and experiences that transcend the self derived from them play an important role in human cooperation and social ability. Professor Haidt's concept of self-transcendence was unique and impressive. This experience broadens individual awareness and allows members to empathize with the purpose and interests of a higher community. I understand that this provides an important foundation for social connection and cooperation. During the lecture, the explanation of religious experience and human social structure through brain science research was impressive. As a result of these studies, it can be interpreted that religious experience has helped to adapt and develop human society. Through this lecture, I realized that it is important to explore the relationship between humans and religion. Religion has been deeply involved in the formation of human nature, society, and culture, and therefore academic research into religion still felt to be a valid and meaningful work. Finally, Professor Haidt's lecture provided an opportunity to think about the definition and role of religion from various perspectives. I felt that it gave me the motivation to break the understanding and preconceived notions of religion and explore it more broadly. This lecture, which describes connectivity to religion and evolution, provides insight into religion that affects individuals and society in various ways.
