15.1 Technology



1. Summary

The term technology has many meanings, the techinque like farming, manufacture industrial products or knowledge of techinque can be a technology and the products of the techinque like cars and computers can be called as technology. 

The technology like moblie phone brought the changes in society. It made the payphones declined and created new norms. It also created the negative phenomenons like increase of anxiety and dependent to technology. 

Social network also brought the many changes. It made the friends from the far distance talk with each other lively. But it has negative aspects like wasting your time or gender inequality.(the woman with sexual profile has a low ability than the woman with non sexual profile)

Video game also has many good aspects like lowering the smoking rate and growing your visual attention. But it also has negative aspects like make your health bad.


2. Discussion

I recently talked with the guy who translated articles into korean the articles written by Theodore Kaczynski also known as Unabomber. He was an genius who went to Havard University to study math at 16 but he found the negative aspects of the modern technology and this society that made by technology. He started to against it by violent ways. However his manifesto about technology is quite impressive. He said that "The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race." So "therefore advocate a revolution against the industrial system."

He said that <“Oh!” say the technophiles, “Science is going to fix all that! We will conquer famine, eliminate psychological suffering, make everybody healthy and happy!” Yeah, sure. That’s what they said 200 years ago. The Industrial Revolution was supposed to eliminate poverty, make everybody happy, etc. The actual result has been quite different.>

Many people in today's world and even the experts such as kurzwail and so on think that technology is always the solution to the society's problem. Kaczynski's arguments are quite radical but it is good text to read when we ask "is the technology always the solution to the society?"

"We suffer from a range of modern ills that have traditionally been very rare: obesity, cancers, accidental death and injury, deliberate death through high-tech weapons (including handguns) and warfare, global plagues like AIDS. Automobile accidents kill over 40,000 Americans every year, and about 1.3 million people globally—that’s roughly 3,300 people killed every day. Nearly 44% of the American population is medicated. A recent study suggests that 28% of all teenagers suffer chronic headaches, with 40% of these occurring daily. Even the mundane daily computer use that many of us experience imposes its own risks: carpal-tunnel syndrome, eyestrain, back and joint pain, headache, toxic chemicals on keyboards and monitors, and the general ill health that results from sedentary behavior."
