15.1-Introduction to Sociology/Technology, the Internet, and Virtual Worlds
1) Summarization
With the advent of the internet, our daily lives have become much easier and more convenient. The internet has allowed us to communicate with people all around the world, access information effortlessly, and has even transformed the way we learn.
One such transformation has been the rise of virtual worlds. These virtual worlds are online 3D spaces where people can interact with others, create their own virtual spaces, and engage in various activities. Virtual worlds have opened up new avenues for socialization, education, and even business.
However, while technology has had many benefits, it has also brought about some challenges. The internet has given rise to cyberbullying, online scams, and the spread of fake news. Moreover, the excessive use of technology can have negative impacts on mental health.
2) What was interesting/what did you learn?
Although I don't know that this is an issue in other countries. In China, 70 percent of parents of families would consider students/kids playing games as bad behavior. But I learned in this study that this is not what the data says.
Like it has long been debated whether or not video game use, particularly playing violent video games, increases aggression. The findings on this are mixed, with some studies suggesting it does and others that it does. Even when there are differences in aggression, they are typically quite small, suggesting the effect of video games on aggression is minimal. Among girls, video gaming in a few cases has been associated with getting in serious fights and carrying a weapon to school. In contrast, some studies have found that playing video games may reduce aggression because it is cathartic.
3) Discussion points
How can we use technology and virtual worlds to promote social change and global awareness?
