W14.2 Race and Ethinitcity

1. Summary

Race biologically classifies humans based on morphological characteristics such as skin color and facial features. They are usually classified by the outside world rather than by their own choice. This separation of races began in Goja Egypt, and scientific attempts were made in the 17th century. The debate about understanding race continues, and some sociologists and biologists believe it is a social construct that race is an artificial distinction made by humans. This social constructivist approach does not block other perspectives. To understand race, we must recognize that socially constructed boundaries overlap with biological and genetic elements and combine approaches. These races play an important role in world society and are also the basis for other types of stratification, such as pollution and marriage.

2. Interesting point

It was interesting that racism could not only go to a few people, but also to a large number of people. Come to think of it, it was a fact that I knew. This fact reminded me of the Japanese colonial period of the Republic of Korea. An example of a few Japanese oppressing and discriminating against a large number of Koreans came to mind, which touched my heart even more.

3. Question

  Does racism affect racial disparities?
