W12.2- Dramaturgy (sociology) -LUAN QIANYUE
1. Summary
In 1959, sociologist Erving Goffman presented his view of drama in Self-Presentation in Everyday Life. According to Goffman's theory of drama, people play the roles they use in their daily interactions with others. Roles can be understood in two ways, either as a public portrayal of the role or as a representation of the role played in reality. These roles allow individuals to present themselves to others to create specific impressions, much like actors present roles to theater audiences
2. Interesting point
These are the seven elements of performance identified by Erving Goffman:Belief in the part one is playing
1)The front (or "mask")
2)Dramatic realization
3)Idealization
4)Maintenance of expressive control
5)Misrepresentation
6)Mystification
Together, these elements shape how a performer presents themselves to their audience, and how they are perceived by that audience. By understanding these elements, we can gain insight into how people construct and maintain their social identities in different contexts.
3.Discussion point
Does Dramaturgy ignore the structural limits and power imbalances of social interaction?
The existence of power relations and inequalities in social interactions is often overlooked in the study of dramaturgy. Power structures, power struggles and power imbalances in theatrical productions and performance events, and the impact and implications of these for audiences, are often given less attention.
