INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY/DEVIANCE


1.SUMMARY

deviance is divided into formal deviance and informal deviance. It is diverse and is defines differently depending on society. Sociology explain deviance in the following way. :

Psychological and Biological explanations (conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreats, rebellion)

, Social-strain typology

, Structural-functionalism

, Conflict

, Labeling (: individuals are defined by how others perceive and label them).

 What is needed to prevent or not todo deviance again is social control. Social control is divided into formal and informal. And it is based on retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation, societal protection.


2.INTERESTING POINT

 The content of the ‘Labeling theory’ “A deviant label is applies to them” was interesting.

 Labeling theory suggests that social deviance is not just a result of an individual's behavior but also the way society reacts to that behavior. According to this theory, an individual's behavior only becomes deviant when it is labeled as such by others in society.

It highlights the importance of social context in determining what is considered deviant. 

Another interesting point of labeling theory is that it argues that the process of labeling someone as deviant can actually lead to more deviant behavior. This is because being labeled as deviant can result in negative consequences such as social exclusion, discrimination, and stigmatization, which can lead individuals to further engage in deviant behavior as a way of coping with the negative effects of the label.

Finally, ‘Labeling theory’ suggests that deviance is not inherent in an individual but is rather a social construct created through the interactions between individuals and society. This means that individuals who engage in deviant behavior may not necessarily see themselves as deviant but are labeled as such by others in society.


3.DISCUSSION

So what should we do to be wary of false labeling?
