W10.1- Introduction to Sociology/Deviance-LUAN QIANYUE

 1.  Summary

The sociology of deviance or transgression explores behaviors and/or actions that violate formally established rules (e.g., crime) as well as informal violations of social norms. Although transgressions may have negative connotations, violations of social norms are not always negative behaviors; positive deviance exists in some cases. Despite the violation of norms, the behavior can still be classified as positive or acceptable.

Deviance serves several functions: (a) it clarifies norms and increases consistency, (b) it strengthens social bonds between people who respond to deviant behavior, and (c) it can help lead to positive social change.

2.Interesting point

Sutherland's Differential Association theory is a criminological theory that suggests that individuals learn criminal behavior through their interactions with others. Specifically, the theory proposes that people are more likely to engage in criminal activities if they are exposed to more definitions favorable to crime than to those unfavorable to crime. This exposure to definitions favorable to crime occurs through communication with others, primarily in intimate personal groups, such as family, peers, and acquaintances.

According to the theory, the frequency, duration, and intensity of an individual's exposure to criminal definitions will determine the degree to which they adopt a criminal lifestyle. Additionally, the theory proposes that criminal behavior is learned in the same way that non-criminal behavior is learned, through reinforcement and punishment.

3.Discussion point

How can these deviant behaviors be measured and assessed?

Comments

  1. Deviance can be legally assessed. Legal assessment is a formal way of measuring and judging criminal behavior. Legal assessments impose penalties based on the category of behavior and criminality, which are determined by the laws and regulations of the country or region.
