W10.1 Introduction to Sociology/Deviance

 1.Summary

This article deals with the theory of deviance used by sociologists, as well as current crime statistics. Deviations are divided into two types of behavior that violates cultural norms. The first is formal deviations that violate officially enacted laws. Examples of formal deviations include robbery, theft, murder, rape, and assault. The second is informal social norms, informal deviations that violate norms that are not codified by law. Examples of informal deviations include Kovbigi and Torm. Within the theory of deviance, the structural-functionalist approach argues that deviant behavior plays an important role in society for various reasons. These functions are said to be important functions to confirm the cultural values and norms of society for members of society.

2.Interesting point

The content about labeling theory was interesting to me. Labeling theory is said to represent the idea that an individual deviates when adopting a label by applying abnormal labels or showing actions, actions, and attitudes related to the label. Through this, the concept of deviation is further developed by explaining how deviant identity develops. Labeling theory claims that people force their identity on them and then adopt it, resulting in people deviating.

3.Question

There are two types of deviations. Do you think that all deviant behavior is bad?
