Social networks are platforms for connecting and communicating on the Internet. They allow users to create profiles, post messages, share multimedia content such as photos and videos, and connect and interact with friends, family and other users. Social networks can also offer features such as chat, video calls and online games, allowing users to communicate with people thousands of miles away in real time.

The smallest unit of analysis in a social network is the individual in his or her social environment, the 'actor' or 'self'. Self-network analysis focuses on network characteristics such as size, strength of relationships, density, centrality, prestige and roles such as the lsolator, liaisons and bridges. This type of analysis is most commonly used in fields such as psychology or social psychology, ethnographic kinship analysis or other genealogical studies of relationships between individuals.
