10.1 Deviance

 1. Summary

What is Deviance? It is a action that violates social expectations that determine the human behavior in the society. Sociology studies how many "Deviance" occurring in the statically and how people define "Deviance".

There are some theories explains the "Deviance". 

Social biologists explain that humans may evolve by group coherence. So humans tend to avoid the Deviance by the pressure to confrom the social norms and expectations.

According to Social-Strain Typology presented by Robert K. Merton there are some types when we discuss Deviance. We can see this by 2 criteria. "(1) a person's motivations or his or her adherence to cultural goals; (2) a person's belief in how to attain his or her goals." (cultural goals and means of attaining those goals) When we accept both this is conformity, when we accept only cultural goals this is innovation, when we accept only means of attaining the goals is is ritualistic, when we reject both it is retreatism. When we start to replace both it is rebellion.

The structural-functionalist argue that Deviance plays important roles in society. First it distinguish and line the boundaries between what they can and cannot do, ans what is acceptable and what is not. Second it makes the social order by excluding Deviant people from the non Deviant people. Lastly Deviance plays role to make changes in the society.

Conflict Theory interests in the inequality of Deviance. The powerful people's crime is not punished that well compared to powerless people. And they also take interest in how the inequality of the wealth created the Deviance.

Labeling theory argue that by people Label the actor who did the simple Deviance as a Deviant person that the actor do more Deviance. 

2. Discussion 

Does media influence the "Deviance" of the individuals? Many people argue that violent media promote violence. This argument had been presented since the media is made. United States in 1970s their is an argument that comic books make the teenagers violent. Even today many government organizations claim that violent games make more violence.

Similarly I recently watched a conspiracy video that modern music is made by CIA to make people into irrational beings. This topics are controversial and some people claim the ridiculous things like this. I personally think there is a influence of media that make Deviance but there are more than that and more complicated variants.
