W9.2 Introduction to Sociology/Socialization

1.Summary

Socialization is a fundamental sociological concept composed of multiple elements. It should be further emphasized that socialization is a process that prepares humans to function in social life and is culturally relative. And other classes, such as other cultures, races, and genders, should not be forced to judge and should not be so. Also, although it is an important sociological process in the development of individuals who can function in human society, not all aspects of human behavior are learned, so it should be noted. Socialization is divided into primary and secondary. Primary socialization occurs in childhood and adolescence, and secondary socialization refers to lifelong socialization when meeting new groups that need additional socialization. Some scholars say that only one of these occurs, but most social scientists claim that both develop. A common way to explain the importance of socialization is to use the few unfortunate cases that have not been socialized by adults while growing up through neglect, unhappiness, or intentional abuse.

2.New point

I learned new things about the theoretical understanding of socialization. Socialization has developed over time. The definitions and theories of socialization vary considerably, but first, there is symbolic interactionism. Symbolic interactionism refers to the development of the ego as a result of interrelated social interactions and interpretation processes, and argues that socialization is a lifelong process. Secondly, there is role theory. This is considered a process of learning appropriate norms, attitudes, self-image, and values that allow groups to accept socialization and effectively fulfill new roles. In addition, there are reinforcement theories that the ego develops as a result of cognitive evaluation of costs and benefits, and internalization theories that claim that socialization is a series of steps for individuals to learn how to participate in various levels of social organization.

3.Question

How do you think socialization varies by class, race, and gender?
