W6.2- Introduction to Sociology/Economy-LUAN QIANYUE

1.      Summary

The economy is one of the earliest social structures of human society. In sociology, an economy is a social system for the exchange and management of social resources. The earliest economies were based on trade, which was usually a simple exchange in which people traded one good for another. Economic sociology is the branch of sociology that studies economic phenomena. The subfield views the economy as a social system embedded in society as a whole. In many ways, the field challenges mainstream economic theory because it rejects the assumption that people are self-interested, rational agents acting in isolation. Instead, economic sociology views individuals as intrinsically interconnected through interpersonal relationships, social networks, institutions, and shared cultures.

2.    Interesting point

Sociology and economics are related fields because they both study human behavior and the structures that shape human behavior. Sociologists may study how economic systems affect social stratification and inequality, while economists may explore how social norms and institutions affect economic behavior and outcomes. Overall, the intersection of sociology and economics provides valuable insights into how societies function and how individuals and groups interact within them.

3.      Discussion point

What are the contradictions between capitalism and socialism and how to solve them?
