W6.1 Sociology of religion

 1) Summarize

Sociology of religion is the study of religious belief, practice and organization using the tools and methods of sociology. The sociology of religion differs from the philosophy of religion in that it does not aim to evaluate the validity of religious belief. Durkheim, Marx and Weber had very complex and developed theories about the nature and influence of religion. Among them, Durkheim and Weber are generally more difficult to understand, and religion is considered an extremely important social variable in the work of the three.

2) Interesting point

One point of interest to me is that rationalists reject phenomenological and functionalist approaches that fail to understand why believers in non-scientific knowledge systems think their ideas are correct.  Rationalists say that one cannot explain forms of knowledge in terms of the beneficial psychological or societal effects that an outside observer may see them as producing and emphasize the importance of looking at the point of view of those who believe in them.People do not believe in God.practice magic or think that whiches.cause misfortune because they think they are providing themselves with psychological reassurance, or to achieve greater  social cohesion for their social groups. Rationalists see the history of modern societies as the rise of scientific knowledge and the subsequent decline of non-rational belief.

3) Discussion point

The more religion a society has, the more likely people are to be religious. This contradicts the old idea of secularization, which holds that if a liberal religious community tolerates a wide range of beliefs, then people are less likely to share certain beliefs. What do you think about that?
