introduction to sociology/religion
1.summary
sociologists study religion same way they sudy society using methodological aprroaches like survey analysis..etc. They take neutral attitude so they don’t want to evaluate religion is right or wrong.
Religion are defined as
<sacred vs profane>,
<religion as existential questioning>,
Only people who try to answer existential questions are considered religious.
<religion as supernature>.
But there are criticism about deifine about religion. One of them is 'something daliy one can be sacred, too’. So the range of definition is too wide.
There are type of religion : church(all-encompassing worldview), denomination, sect(rebellious & spontaneity), cult(new religious group but not have to seperated, temporary) or new religious movement.
Theories of region try to explain function ,role ,nature of religion.
structural-functional :+social cohesion, social control, providing meaning and purpose, - justification error
Social conflicts : based on capitalism such as means of production.
Social constructionist : region is not supernature, just people describe religion looks like supernature.
religious pluralism
Social-psychological : religion existence reason is religion can answer about scientifically difficult to prove.
Religion affects various social factors : gender, race, class, education, health. So religion plays an improtant roles in our life.
2.interesting point
The perspective which says religion is not super nature, just people describe phenomenon looks like supernature. I think it is sometimes right to blame religious and supernatural things for something that people don’t want to give your own meaning to your daily liofe or accept. But I can’t say that there is or isn’t a supernature phenomenon. I wonder if somethink religious exists or if people consider something that has not yet been scientifically proven religious.
3.question
Do you think the influence of religion will increase or decrease in the future?
