W 9-2: Introduction_to_Sociology/Socialization- LEE JEONGYOON

 1. summary

Socialization is the process of preparing humans to function in social life. Socialization is relative. Socialization varies by race, class, gender, sexuality, and religious social position.

Socialization can be divided into two periods. There is primary socialization, which occurs during childhood and adolescence, and secondary socialization, which occurs throughout life as we meet new groups that require additional socialization. Primary socialization is primarily the development of basic, core identity elements, while secondary socialization is more specific to new group membership and roles.

Socialization is also divided into broad socialization and negotiated socialization. Broad socialization is socialization that promotes independence, individualism, and self-expression. It is called broad socialization because it has the potential to produce broad consequences. It is called narrow socialization because it promotes obedience and conformity and does not have a wide range of outcomes.

Another type of socialization is resocialization. Resocialization is the re-socialization of people who were not successful in their initial socialization. Institutions that help with this are prisons and mental health institutions.
