Cuba is less free than what?



1. According to Freedom House the cuba is one of the nation with less liberty. Well in liberalist perspective that can be valid. Cuba has a one party system and the communis party ruled in cuba after 1961(Although the cuban revolution happend in 1959, Castro who lead the revolution claimed he was an anti-imperialist nationalist not communist until 1961). There is no opposition party in cuba and protest that is not permitted can be punished by law enforcement. Freedom House criticize the protest made and supported by united state cuban exiles in 2019 being oppressed by authority and some of the protestors being punished harsh. But they positively view the new family law of Cuba that allow homosexual parents.

I think it is not perfectly valid firstly the protest in 2019 is very controversial. It is usa who impose sanctions against cuba. At least 10% of cuban gdp became reduced after usa's new sanctions against cuba. It is usa who is to be blamed for economic crisis not cuban government. Of course the cuban goverment has a responsibility for some problems in cuba, this protest was made by USA to overthrow Cuba and make a cuba into a colony of USA like before the revolution. And as Freedom House is connected and located in USA they are being more critical to cuba compared with other countries.

Also in the area of life issues the cuban people can involve and speak about the certain policies. When the 1974 cuban constitution was made there was a debate and involvement of the various villages and various people. This can be criticized as a "limited" democracy although the one party keep rule people can decide the policies and ask about the policy. 

2. According to Freedom House the Haiti is more free than cuba. Haiti is the nation with more high rate of famine than North korea. The security is very dangerous and even more dangerous than Venezuela or Honduras. The literacy rate is one of the lowest in the world. If we consider the "freedom to not die by famine" and "freedom to not die by street violence and crime"; "freedom to learn" the cuba is not only free than haiti it is the one of the most free place in Latin America. Although the cuba is facing the economic crisis made by USA sanctions and Covid19 the cuba still has the longest life expectancy and high security and high literacy.

So in what sense the Haiti is free than cuba? Freedom to starve? Freedom House is very usa-centered I think.
