9.2-Introduction to Sociology/Socialization

1) Summarization

Socialization is the process by which individuals learn the customs, values, and norms of their society, and develop the social skills necessary to function within it. It involves learning through interaction with family, peers, institutions, and media and includes both conscious and unconscious processes. Socialization helps individuals develop a sense of self and their place in society, where they learn to form relationships, make decisions, and navigate social expectations. It is crucial for individual functioning and the stability of society.

2) What was interesting/what did you learn?

Marshall examined secondary socialization concerning mortality.  interviewed a number of retirement home residents to explore how their environment influenced their thinking about death. Marshall found that a combination of relationships, behavioral changes, and retirement home culture contributed to a conception of death that was both accepting and courageous.

Residents of this particular retirement home found themselves with more time on their hands - to think about death - because they no longer had to care for their own homes.
