8.1 Economy And Social phenomena

 


1. Summary

Economic sociology and Socioeconomics both study the relationship between how economical/social factors cause social/economical phenomena.

Marxian theories are good examples of this. Various marxists pay attentioned how economical system called "capitalism" influence society. Various scholars focused on not only capitalism but also secularization, relationship between economy and religion, rationalization and urbanization.

At the "Socioeconomic" Wikipedia page, it is mentioning various examples of how environmental pollution is made by economical causes. Deforestation, pollution of water, Habitat destruction and so on.

2. Discussion

In this discussion I will talk about why economical factor is quite important than other factors when we observe society. 

Is really the unemployment(social phenomena) caused by technological development(technical factors)? Some people might assume that recent unemployment was caused by advanced technology. And maybe in the near future most people will lose their job. Is it true?

We should consider the economical factor rather than watching a technological changes. I recently read a book name <Automation and the Future of Work> written by Aaron Benanav who is economic sociologist in Humboldt University of Berlin.

He argued that even if the technology advanced as capital always seek to sell more products job cannot be lost. For example u and other 9 employees made a 10 products by one machine in a hour at yesterday now machine advanced and 10 products can be made by 5 people with 1 machine. So the 5 people lose their job? No if the products keep selling 5 people will remain in their job because the capital keep seek to gain more profit. Some jobs will be maintained. 

The almost 60% job categories exist in 1960s are now disappeared as the technology emerged. But are we in the serious job loss? No.

So why we are facing a large unemployment? Benanav argue it is because of economic recession not technology. He showed why we should consider economic factor mainly when we observe society.

What thing make economic factor distinguished compared with the other factors?

What kind of economic factors are important?
