Power & authority

The difference between power and authority is that power is an ability and authority is an ability. In this regard, power can be acquired, while authority depends on the ability of one person to influence others. Power is the ability to subordinate others or to dominate a situation. Authority is the ability to influence others without the need for subordination.

Types of power:

  • Coercive power: It's a kind of power that's been exercised since threat and fear. What is sought in exercising power in this way is for individuals to carry out actions even if they are contrary to their values.
  • Reward power: It is the kind of power that is exercised in generating an exchange. Reward power can be positive.
  • Power of legitimacy: It is the power that is obtained after being appointed or elected to exercise it. This election may be made by a person, group of persons or institution.
  • Expert power: It is based, as its name indicates, on the expertise or domain of some specific skill, which allows it to influence others.
  • Reference power: It is the power exercised by groups of individuals who share the same interests.
  • Information power: Ability to influence, manipulate or coerce others from handling sensitive information.
Types of authority:

  • Formal authority: It is the authority exercised as a result of occupying a position of power.
    • Linear: when exercised from one individual to another, what is known as chain of command.
    • Functional: when authority is divided among several individuals of the same rank.
  • Operational authority: Authority is exercised not on persons, but on acts.
  • Authority by acceptance: It is the authority that is acquired on the basis of the choice of another person, collective or institution.
